MONROE, WA (7-14-12) – Utah’s Michael Self and the Richard Childress Racing Driver Development supported Golden Gate Racing Team came home with a strong second place finish in the NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Evergreen Speedway. The impressive run at the famed .646 mile Evergreen Speedway continues a mid series streak of strong finishes for the San Francisco based team as they hammer down to chase the 2012 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship title.

“We had a really strong car the whole day and it is definitely beginning to show just how strong our entire program is at the Golden Gate Racing Team and RCR,” said Self. “We’ve had some good finishes lately and we’re looking to get that elusive oval track win before the end of the year.”

Self and the Boys of the Bay started their strong day in the Pacific Northwest during qualifying on Saturday. After turning a top speed of 100.116 miles per hour in the Rockwell Watches-Golden Gate Meat Company-Bay Bio Diesel Chevrolet, Self started the 150 lap race in the fourth starting position behind defending champion Greg Pursley, point leader Dylan Kwasniewski and former series champion Eric Holmes.

At the waving of the green flag Pursley powered to the head of the field as Self raced in Holmes’ wake and the two muscled their way in behind the leader. Following a restart on the 30-lap, Holmes closed in on Pursley for the lead and overtook the top position on the 38th lap while Self worked his way into the mix to keep himself inches from Holmes, awaiting the prime opportunity to make a move for the lead.

After stalking his pray so cautiously, Self move in and assumed the lead from Holmes with 83 laps complete. A dogfight for the lead broke out between the two top runners for much of the later laps of the race. Self led a total of 48 laps in the event until lap 131 when Holmes redeemed the position and never relinquished it to the checkered flag despite continues efforts by Self to work his way back to the front in attempt to win his second event of 2012.

“We were all really happy with the finish,” added Self. “It was great racing with Eric Holmes and to be competitive to fight for the lead with the three time champion.”

At the line Holmes posted his first win of the season while Self rolled in a close second to bring home his fourth top five finish of the year. With the top finish, Self is now seventh in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West point standings. There is a total of 71 points between the #21 Golden Gate Racing Team Chevrolet and point leader Dylan Kwasniewski.

“Last year Michael and the team showed great strength at Evergreen but we got his by some hard luck before the end,” said Jimi Z. owner of the Golden Gate Racing Team. “This year they came back strong and proved what they are all about, racing for the lead with two former champions and the point leader. I’m really proud of these guys and I’m confident we’re going to get a second win before this year is over.”

The Golden Gate Racing Team will return to action on Saturday, July 28 when the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West returns to Colorado National Speedway for the first of six remaining events on the 2012 series.
