In his first ARCA Racing Series start of the year, Michael Self proved there were no cobwebs to shake as he piloted the No. 28 Sinclair Chevrolet up 23 positions to a third-place result at Kansas Speedway on Friday evening.

With morning practice and qualifying cancelled due to a persistent mist covering the 1.5-mile tri-oval, the field’s lineup was set by points. Self knew he would face an uphill battle starting in 26th, but the clouds cleared in early afternoon allowing officials to add a lone practice session. The No. 28 Chevy jumped to the top of the speed charts after two laps, and only slight adjustments were needed to dial in the Sinclair racing machine.

“This race went unimaginably well,” Self said. “I was a little concerned starting off the day when morning practice got rained out, but ARCA re-organized the schedule and got us some practice time in the afternoon and we were fast right off the bat.”

“Even after not having driven a stock car since a year ago, we were at the top of the speed charts right away. I have to give a huge amount of credit to Mardy Lindley and everyone on the No. 28 Sinclair Chevy team for putting such an outstanding car together. I had a ton of confidence in the car after practice, but starting 26th due to not qualifying wasn’t the most comfortable feeling.”

With a group of Sinclair Oil Corporation guests cheering him from pit road, Self cracked the top-10 on Lap 5 and never looked back. Several early cautions, including a red flag, couldn’t shake the 25-year-old driver’s focus as he continued his climb through the field.

“Having people from Sinclair Oil Corporation at the race for their ARCA debut was a great experience,” Self said. “Everyone at that company is genuine, enthusiastic, and down to earth, so getting to meet and interact with all of them was really special for me.”

In the closing laps of the Kansas 150, the No. 28 Sinclair Chevy was turning laps faster than the leaders, but there wasn’t enough time to move past the newly crowned 2016 ARCA Champion, Chase Briscoe, or ARCA and Camping World Truck Series regular Austin Cindric. Self took the checkers in third, his best result in the ARCA Racing Series.
