Michael-Self-300-Pixels3PARK CITY, UTAH (April 17, 2012) – 21 year-old NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West contender and RCR Development Driver Michael Self drove to a pair of top-five finishes over the weekend at Havasu 95 Speedway. Against a turnout of nearly 40 Late Models, Self drove the Golden Gate Racing Team / Rockwell Timekeepers #17 car to a second place finish. He followed up the second place finish by finishing fourth in the “Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150” for the K&N West to wrap up the evening in his #21 Golden Gate Racing Chevrolet.

Returning to the Late Model at Havasu had Self eager to continue where he left off in January, where he qualified first and finished second at the tough quarter-mile bullring. Self qualified third quickest on Saturday a 15.237 lap around the speedway.

“The car was really strong all weekend right off the trailer,” Self said. “The competition was the best of Late Model drivers from the West Coast and with more than 35 cars I knew it’d be tougher than last time we were here.”

Self started second in the scheduled 50 lap race after a four car invert was pulled. Self ran closely behind race leader Devon Osthemier throughout the race event that was slowed by numerous red flags and yellow flags. On lap six, Self moved to the inside of Osthemier and nearly completed the pass for the lead before the caution came out once again.

The restart on lap nine saw Self slip back to the fourth position after some side-by-side battling.

A pair of serious crashes ended the event prematurely after 31 laps were scored complete including a mix of green and caution laps, with Self advancing to the second position by virtue of avoiding the melees.

“The car was really strong on restarts. I got a good shot at the lead about halfway through and as soon as I made the pass the caution flew. We got reverted back to second and never got another good chance,” Self said. “The top four of us had some really good racing so it’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get more green flag laps. It was a lot of good, hard racing in between the cautions!”

Self started fourth in the featured “Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150” for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West to wrap up the night. Starting fourth, Self fell to the rear of the field after being spun midway through the race. But Self made a huge comeback in the closing stages to finish in the fourth position.

With the fourth place effort, Self is sixth in the series points standings with his home track Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT next up on the schedule. The Miller Grand Prix will be held on Saturday April 28.
