A Look Back: Self and the Venturini Motorsports No. 25 Sinclair Oil Toyota team started their 2020 championship-chasing campaign off with a bang by qualifying on pole, leading 61 laps, and winning the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. This was Self’s second win in three years at Daytona, and second in two starts at the 2.5-mile superspeedway with crew chief Kevin Reed.

A Look Ahead: After nearly a month off, the ARCA Menards Series returns to the track this week at the one-mile Phoenix Raceway, just outside of Phoenix, AZ. Though the track is new to the ARCA Menards Series, Self is no stranger to Phoenix with eight career starts, all in the former NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. Self is credited with five top-10s, two top-fives, and a win at Phoenix. His most recent start at the track was in November, 2013.

Self on Phoenix: “Phoenix is such a special track to me for so many reasons. It’s not just a track that I’ve won at, it’s the track where I learned how to big-track race. Early in my stock car career I really struggled there because I just didn’t know what to do on an oval that size. I specifically remember sitting down with my old K&N West crew chief Steve Portenga after a bad run there during the 2012 spring race and talking through the technique of driving there. After he explained how he used to drive the track it seemed like things started to click for me. My driving style changed everywhere, and I won my first K&N West Series race not long after that and followed it up with my win at Phoenix (Raceway) in the fall of that same year. After that I loved it and couldn’t wait to get back. I really have been waiting seven years to race there again.”

Self returned to consistent competition in 2017 and finished fourth in the NKNPSW championship standings with two wins, seven top-fives, and 13 top-10’s in 13 starts, as well as one win, and four top-fives in six ARCA Racing Series starts. Self captured his second career ARCA Racing Series victory in the 2018 season opener at Daytona International Speedway. In 2019 Self competed full-time in the ARCA Menards series finishing second in the championship standings with four wins, 14 top-fives, and 15 top-tens in 20 starts.
